If you really want to escape the things that harass you, what you’re needing is not to be in a different place but to be a different person.

– Lucius Annaeus Seneca

You are worthy of being chosen, fought for, and loved. Remember that.

True wisdom comes to each of us when we realise how little we understand about life, ourselves, and the world.

About Michael Theron

After completing my studies at UNISA as a Clinical Psychologist, I did a one-year internship at Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital, Gauteng where I worked in both the adult and children’s wards. I completed my community service at Dr George Mukhari Hospital, Ga-Rankuwa where I was to spend a further two years until I opened up a private practice in Pretoria. From there I moved to Underberg to work at Riverview Manor for 18 months, until I finally moved down to Durban to open a new treatment centre called Choose Life Specialist Recovery Centre. After spending some time there, I decided to go into private practice and pursue my passion for working with people who want to bring about change in their lives.

Philosophy

I consider it a great privilege to be able to live my passion on a daily basis, that being walking a journey of discovery with others. All of us, at times in our lives, experience obstacles and challenges that require that we do something different to the way we normally do things and that is where psychology can serve a person well. My purpose in life is to walk part of that journey of self-discovery with another and assist in helping them grow and live an authentic life.

What does a clinical psychologist do?

Clinical psychology is an integration of science, theory, and clinical knowledge for the purpose of understanding, preventing, and relieving psychologically-based distress or dysfunction and to promote subjective well-being and personal development. Clinical psychologists meet with clients to identify problems – emotional, mental and behavioural—in their lives. Through observation, interviews and assessments, the psychologist will diagnose any existing or potential disorders. Then, together with the client, they formulate a program of treatment according to the client’s needs. Psychologists monitor the client’s progress on a regular basis to ensure that their needs are met by the course of action, and to adjust it if necessary. On the job, clinical psychologists:

  • Identify psychological, emotional or behavioural issues
  • Diagnose psychological, emotional or behavioural disorders
  • Develop and implement treatment plans and therapeutic processes
  • Help clients define goals and plan action to achieve personal, social, educational and vocational development and adjustment
  • Monitor client progress through regular meetings or sessions

Week 10: Check your progress
